Beijing BISS International School is an independent co-educational English-language day school in Beijing, Peoples Republic of China.

It provides instruction for kindergarten to grade 12 students from the expatriate community of Beijing. Founded in 1994, nearly 340 students from 40 different nationalities attend the school.

History

Beijing BISS International School was founded in 1994 by its sister school, the International School Singapore (ISS), as an independent proprietary, co-educational, English-language day school offering an international curriculum for Kindergarten - 12 students from the expatriate community of Beijing. The 11,000 square meter campus is conveniently located near one of the major expatriate residential areas in central Beijing just off the North Third Ring Road and close to the Olympic Games Village.

Over 340 students from 40 different countries attend the School. BISS faculty members hail from the USA, Canada, Australia, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, China, the Philippines, Portugal, and the U.K, Most hold advanced degrees, are licensed in their home countries and qualified in their respective fields. They are each experienced in international education and their diverse backgrounds contribute to the school's international character.

Accreditation

BISS is the first school in Beijing and one of the first in China authorized for all three IB programs: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP). It is accredited by Council of International Schools (CIS)- International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO); Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC); National Centre for School Curriculum and Textbook Development (NCCT), and licensed by the Beijing Education Commission.

Campus

BISS is a small-sized school located conveniently near one of the major expatriate residential areas in Beijing just off the North Third Ring Road. The campus is close to central Beijing, the Asian Games Village and the Olympic Stadium - the Bird Nest. The location is important as it creates a strong link to the local community.

The main building holds more than thirty classrooms, a central library, music, drama and art studios, science labs, design and technology lab, multi-purpose auditorium, cafeteria and administration offices. There are separate play areas for kindergarten and elementary school students, running track and multi-purpose courts for basketball, football, hockey and volleyball and a Rock-climbing wall. BISS has a full time private medical clinic situated on the second floor of the building. The clinic has a full time qualified doctor on staff who provides medical services for BISS students and staff.

Technology @ BISS

Students at BISS use engaging technologies in collaborative, inquiry-based learning environments to transform knowledge and skills into products, solutions and new information. This includes the 1:1 mobile computing implementation as well as StudyWiz and Wikispaces initiatives for virtual sharing and learning. BISS learners has the tools and the support to connect, communicate and collaborate across the school and across the world. All learners at BISS are able to create products, often in collaboration with others not at BISS to solve problems and make a difference to the world.

At BISS, technology skills and digital literacy are fully integrated into all curriculum areas and teaching. During the Elementary school years, students will develop appropriate tech skills that they can utilize in every subject. Technology is used as a tool in all areas of learning and BISS students will become fluent in the use of technology to further their learning.
